Description

“The Spice Islands Cookbook.” Compiled by the staff of the Spice Island Company, it was published by Lane Book Company and is a first edition, first printing, so stated. The cookbook is a hard cover measuring 6½ x 10 inches with 208 pages. It is in good gently used condition with light wear to the covers; flipping through, the pages appear clean and unmarked but there are papers/labels dated 1975 pasted on the inside of the front cover. The book belonged to a woman who was a major in the Army, stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia – pretty cool.

Synopsis

This is a lovely cookbook from the early 1960’s. It starts off with a history of the spice trade, has a brief “how to use” section and is then followed by a wide variety of recipes, including unusual ones such as gurkas dulisas, tea eggs, cumin seed wafers, olive canape spread, pate beau monde, crab mousse ring, cucumber aspic, lobster potage, rogan jaush, sweetbreads in mushroom sauce, greek walnut cake and more. Many pages have a whimsical drawing on it, so the pages are as fun to look at as the recipes are to read. The last sections of the book include a description for each herb or spice, and the suggested uses to best showcase it, followed by an herb chart for quick and easy reference.
