This is the story of Anatole, who led an interesting life, it is a fascinating look back at history through the eyes of an ordinary man. He was born in Macedonia which was then part of Greece in 1896, but his family considered themselves to be Bulgarian. He recounts life in their small village in detail, it sounds quite hardscrabble. He talks in depth of his childhood and schooling and family, then goes on to recount his experiences in three wars: the First Balkan War, the Second Balkan War, and World War II. He then goes back to school (gymnasium or college) and then undertakes an arduous journey to the United States. This book is fascinating and engrossing, written beautifully and giving the reader a look at a vanished way of life.
