Known to sheet music collectors simply as JVR, John Van Buren Ranck was born in 1875 in Pennsylvania, moving to New York City as an adult. Beginning his career as an illustrator, Ranck started to provide covers for Tin Pan Alley publisher Fred Fisher, then for several years nearly exclusively for publisher Leo Feist. They were presented in a variety of styles from caricatures to silhouettes and portraits, most of them very clean in design, and virtually all signed with his unique three-initial circle, JVR.
