“In A Little Spanish Town (‘Twas On A Night Like This)” a lovely waltz from 1926 with lyrics by Lewis and Young and music by Mabel Wayne. The cover features a photo inset of Julia Kelety as well as a pretty Spanish themed artistic rendering. The cover art was done by John Van Buren Ranck. Known to sheet music collectors simply as JVR, John Van Buren Ranck was born in 1875 in Pennsylvania, moving to New York City as an adult. Beginning his career as an illustrator, Ranck started to provide covers for Tin Pan Alley publisher Fred Fisher, then for several years nearly exclusively for publisher Leo Feist. They were presented in a variety of styles from caricatures to silhouettes and portraits, most of them very clean in design, and virtually all signed with his unique three-initial circle, JVR. He ended his career as a cartoonist with with the strip “This is America”, a historical and social comic on people and incidents that made the country strong, as well as the strip “Polly and Jolly.”
