Part story but mostly recipes, this book is a treasure for anyone who longs for days gone by. The author describes her childhood ‘raised poor in rural Southern Mississipi, picking cotton 12 hours a day for about 10 cents an hour.’ But most of all, she talks about the food she and her family made and ate, and all the traditions surrounding it. Just the names of the different chapters give a sense of place and time: Backwoods Breakfasts; Dirt-Water Dinners; Friday at the Fish Camp; Southern Nuts; Dinner-on-the-Ground; Mississippi Mud and other Southern Desserts to Die For; Button Poppin’ Fried Favorites; and Bayou to Bay Seafood Favorites. This is destined to be an instant classic in any kitchen!
